The concept, claims Paul Horsch, has caused exceptional difficulties for modern commentators and translators. There have been numerous, conflicting attempts to translate ancient Sanskrit literature with the word dharma into German, English and French. There is no equivalent single-word synonym for dharma in western languages. It is difficult to provide a single concise definition for dharma, as the word has a long and varied history and straddles a complex set of meanings and interpretations. It has multiple meanings in Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism. Definition ĭharma is a concept of central importance in Indian philosophy and religion. In the Kandahar Bilingual Rock Inscription he used the Aramaic word קשיטא ( qšyṭ’ truth, rectitude). In the 3rd century BCE the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka translated dharma into Greek and Aramaic and he used the Greek word eusebeia (εὐσέβεια, piety, spiritual maturity, or godliness) in the Kandahar Bilingual Rock Inscription and the Kandahar Greek Edicts. In some contemporary Indian languages and dialects it alternatively occurs as dharm. In Prakrit and Pali, it is rendered dhamma. In Classical Sanskrit, and in the Vedic Sanskrit of the Atharvaveda, the stem is thematic: dhárma- ( Devanagari: धर्म). It is semantically similar to the Greek themis ("fixed decree, statute, law"). Figuratively, it means "sustainer" and "supporter" (of deities). In the Rigveda, the word appears as an n-stem, dhárman-, with a range of meanings encompassing "something established or firm" (in the literal sense of prods or poles). It is derived from an older Vedic Sanskrit n-stem dharman-, with a literal meaning of "bearer, supporter", in a religious sense conceived as an aspect of Rta. From this, it takes the meaning of "what is established or firm", and hence "law". The word dharma has roots in the Sanskrit dhr-, which means to hold or to support, and is related to Latin firmus (firm, stable). The antonym of dharma is adharma.Įtymology The Prakrit word " dha-ṃ-ma"/ □□□ ( Sanskrit: Dharma धर्म) in the Brahmi script, as inscribed by Emperor Ashoka in his Edicts of Ashoka (3rd century BCE) : 55 As with the other components of the Puruṣārtha, the concept of dharma is pan-Indian. The ancient Tamil text Tirukkuṟaḷ, despite being a collection of aphoristic teachings on dharma ( aram), artha ( porul), and kama ( inpam), : 453 : 82 is completely and exclusively based on aṟam, the Tamil term for dharma. The concept of dharma was in use in the historical Vedic religion, and its meaning and conceptual scope has evolved over several millennia. In Sikhism, dharma indicates the path of righteousness, proper religious practices, and performing one's own moral duties. Dharma in Jainism refers to the teachings of Tirthankara ( Jina) and the body of doctrine pertaining to the purification and moral transformation of humans. In Buddhist philosophy, dhamma/dharma is also the term for " phenomena". In Buddhism, dharma refers to " cosmic law and order", as expressed by the teachings of the Buddha. The concept is believed to have a transtemporal validity, This includes duties, rights, laws, conduct, virtues and "right way of living". In Hinduism, dharma denotes behaviours that are considered to be in accord with Ṛta-the "order and custom" that makes life and universe possible. It is a key concept with multiple meanings in the Indian religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, among others. Duties, such as learning from teachers ĭharma ( / ˈ d ɑːr m ə/ Sanskrit: धर्म, romanized: Dharma, pronounced i Pali: Dhamma) although no single-word translation exists for dharma in European languages, the term is commonly understood as referring to "order and custom" that sustain life, "virtue", or "religious and moral duties". Upland, rocky terrain sugar maple, hickory, beech, red oak, jack pine. It has a dense crown of leaves, which turn various shades of gold to scarlet in fall. The sugar maple tree may grow to a height of 40 metres (130 feet). The boxelder is the exception, featuring multiple, compound leaves radiating from the leafstalk. The leaf of the sugar maple is the national emblem of Canada. The bark is light brown or greyish and has blocky vertical ridges. Ashleaf maple has similarly arranged leaf scars, but its twigs are green or purple and winter buds are covered in dense whitish hair. The twigs are brown and winter buds hairless. The leafstalks are long, often as long as the leaf itself. In winter, its leaf scars aid in identification their opposite nearly edges meet in a point. It takes about 40 litres of sugar maple sap to make 1 litre of. Other maples can be used as well, but their sap is not nearly as sweet. Compared to sugar and black maple, red maple is a relatively short-lived tree, rarely living longer than 150 years. Tea brewed from the inner bark has been used for treating coughs and diarrhea. Sugar maple gets its name from the sweet sap it produces, which is used to make syrup. Native Americans used red maple bark as an analgesic, a wash for swollen eyes and cataracts, and as a remedy for hives and muscular aches. The leaves are simple and palmate-shaped on most species, with three or five main veins radiating from the leafstalk. The shape of the sugar maple leaf is well known, as it’s found on the Canadian flag and is the national tree of Canada. Here, we identify these top five maples and provide general tips for recognizing maple trees in the forest.ĭespite the many different types of maples, these trees have some common features.įor example, maples have mostly grey-colored bark, and the deciduous leaves are often always arranged on stems opposite each other. That's because the seven less common species are found regionally, whereas the five most common ones are more widespread. Maple sugar and syrup are made largely from the sap of this tree, although sugar is present in the sap of all maples. However, five of those maple species are vastly more common to spot on your nature walk. There are approximately 125 species worldwide and 12 maples native to North America. The word Acer is derived from a Latin word meaning "sharp," and the name refers to the characteristic points on the leaf lobes. Maple trees are classified in a family of their own, the Aceraceae. The only places that are secure from them are the Sanctuary, the Desert Dome, and the Sunken woodland. I wanted different scenery the whole way, so I chose the other fork -go around Marlette Lake via Tahoe Rim trail and then do the Flume. You can go around the right side of Marlette Lake via the Flume itself, then go back the same way and down Tunnel Creek Road. Then you come to a 4-way intersection, and it's decision time. For cautious newbies like me, you just have to get off your bike in a few places. There's some jumping over rocks, but really not enough to challenge hardcore mountain bikers. So you start with a very pleasant ride instead of exhausting yourself with a nasty slog uphill. The first 9.5 miles of this track is mostly downhill, some shade, and some good scenery opening up later in the track. And depending on how you structure it, maybe virtually no climb at all! This extends the ride to 25 miles (no big deal on a bike), but it's less climbing in terms of both the amount of miles you climb and the elevation gain. I decided to do it differently and start at Tahoe Meadows via shuttle from Tunnel Creek Cafe. Not technical enough for the experienced riders, too punishing for everyone else, and not that particularly scenic. That's the shortest route, but the first part involves a brutal 4-mile, 1000 ft climb which no one seems to enjoy. Most people do the 14-mile version of this ride starting at Spooner Lake, past Marlette Lake, on through the Flume itself, and down Tunnel Creek Rd, after which they get a shuttle back to Spooner Lake. The ride delivers scenery in spades, and just enough steep dropoffs to make you feel like you're living dangerously. I'll say more later about the secret way to avoid the brutal climb.įor now let me just say that this may be the most spectacular ride you'll ever do. I'm in reasonably good bike-riding shape, but this was literally my second single-track mountain biking experience, so that's the perspective I'm writing from. For some people it is, but for me I just wanted a great ride with spectacular scenery. Oh yes, everyone (including me) is doing this ride the wrong way, unless of course punishment is part of the goal. If you land anywhere on the site except the gateway page look in the footer for a link labeled "Trail info." Depending upon where you land on the site it can be quite difficult to find descriptions of the routes. My only suggestion would be for Flume Trail Bikes to improve the navigation on its web site. Beautiful flowy trails through large granite bolders with views of Lake Tahoe and to the east. We enjoyed the Flume ride so much that we also did the Tahoe Rim and the Tahoe Rim/Flume Trail rides. Recommned downloading the TrailForks app prior to the ride. There is also a four mile climb from the drop-off point so riders should be in reasonable shape. There is quite a bit of exposure in several spots (if you slipped off the left side of trail you would be seriously injured or killed) so would not recommed for beginner mtn. The views from the Flume trail are spectacular. Driver was friendly and gave us a few navigation tips at the drop-off. Purchased tickets online and caught the shuttle at the scheduled time. Our party of six (ages 55-67) rode the Flume Trail Shuttle to get to the start of the Flume trail and had a wonderful day enjoying spectacular views of Lake Tahoe. Wikipedia gained early contributors from Nupedia, Slashdot postings, and web search engine indexing. Bomis originally intended it as a business for profit. Otherwise, there were initially relatively few rules, and it operated independently of Nupedia. Its integral policy of "neutral point-of-view" was codified in its first few months. The name originated from a blend of the words wiki and encyclopedia. Wikipedia was launched on Janu as a single English-language edition at and announced by Sanger on the Nupedia mailing list. The domains (later redirecting to ) and were registered on January 12, 2001, and January 13, 2001, respectively. On January 10, 2001, Sanger proposed on the Nupedia mailing list to create a wiki as a "feeder" project for Nupedia. Wales is credited with defining the goal of making a publicly editable encyclopedia, while Sanger is credited with the strategy of using a wiki to reach that goal. Nupedia was initially licensed under its own Nupedia Open Content License, but before Wikipedia was founded, Nupedia switched to the GNU Free Documentation License at the urging of Richard Stallman. Its main figures were Bomis CEO Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, editor-in-chief for Nupedia and later Wikipedia. It was founded on March 9, 2000, under the ownership of Bomis, a web portal company. Wikipedia began as a complementary project for Nupedia, a free online English-language encyclopedia project whose articles were written by experts and reviewed under a formal process. Various collaborative online encyclopedias were attempted before the start of Wikipedia, but with limited success. Wikipedia founders Jimmy Wales (left) and Larry Sanger (right) Articles on breaking news are often accessed as a source of frequently updated information about those events. It has been censored by world governments, ranging from specific pages to the entire site. While the reliability of Wikipedia was frequently criticized in the 2000s, it has improved over time, receiving greater praise in the late 2010s and early 2020s, having become an important fact-checking site. It has been criticized for exhibiting systemic bias, particularly gender bias against women and geographical bias against the Global South. Wikipedia has been praised for its enablement of the democratization of knowledge, extent of coverage, unique structure, and culture. Wikipedia's combined editions comprise more than 61 million articles, attracting around 2 billion unique device visits per month and more than 15 million edits per month (about 5.8 edits per second on average) as of July 2023. Initially only available in English, versions in other languages were quickly developed. Founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger on January 15, 2001, it is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, an American nonprofit organization.
